This book lists every bird species - surviving and extinct - since the end of the Pleistocene or Ice Age. Some of these birds are known only by bones and have never been seen alive by man. Fossil spcies (i.e. birds which became extinct before the end of the Ice Age) are not included.
Where species are known only as a result of travelers' accounts and from hearsay evidence, the doubtful staus of these birds is clearly indicated. Data on world distribution, habitat, food, nesting, clutch siz, incubation and fledgling periods are given and for each family of birds a brief summary of the general characteristics of the family is included.
