  • Published by Methuen

Since this book was first published archaeologists have become more and more concerned with the lives of the societies of which archaeological material is the detritus, and contemporary society has become much more concscious of the doings of archaeologist.

This books aim is to describe for the general reader how archaeologists go about their work  - how ancient sites are found, what methods are used to explore them, how finds are dated, and within what limits archaeological evidence is able to tell us how people lived before the dawn of recorded history.

In this new edition, chapters dealing with the actual recovery of archaeological data have been brought up to date;  and those on dating and chronology, have been completely revised.

Of greatest interest is perhaps what the author has to say about the progress that has been made in the reconstruction of the life of the distant past, not only from the material and economic view point, but from the spiritual and cultural also.

This book is lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs and an endpaper map.
