An illustrated encyclopedic survey by International Experts.   Illustrated by Tony Pyzakowski. Indexed.

Birds of prey, or raptors, have captured people's imagination throughout history.  Soaring above the world, in search of prey or migrating to distant lands, they epitomize freedom and strength. Many ancient civilisations worshipped them as gods;  they appear in Egyptian hieroglyphs and American Indian legends.  For centuries they were revered andprotected for use in falconry.

But they have also been hunted, as they found domestic animals easy prey and competed with human hunters for game.  Their habitats have been destroyed as forests have been cut down, marshes drained and wild grasslands ploughed to make way for the relentless spread of agriculture and urbanization.  Wide use of pesticides has put many of them on endangered species lists.

With the development of the conservation movement and a growing awareness of the fragility of wildlife, raptors have become increasingly valued and protected in many parts of the developed world.

This book deals with the biology of raptors, their breeding habits, the main threats to them, and the conservation successes.  Above all. it imparts a feeling for the beauty of these birds, for their importance in human culture, and for the inspiration they have given to people everywhere.

Please Note:  Because of the large size of this book $5 has been added in the normal price to help cover the additional packaging and postage cost.
