This book is the first of several titles on selected Australian subjects initiated and sponsored by the Oil and Gas division of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd.   By publishing these books the company hopes that Australians will benefit from the educational quailty they contain and also serve to bring every Australian close to their history and heritage.

This book is intended as a source book for information on the birds of the Bass Strait region but will also be a useful guide for the young or inexperienced ornithologist.

The text is designed to point out gaps in the existing knowledge of the birds that inhabit Bass Strait and to indicate directions for their future study.  The physical features and hints to the identification of the birds are described, together with bredding, behavioural, and geographical notes and the status of the bird within the total bird population of the Bass Strait area.

A very fine selection of seadbird photographs both in colour and black and white, is a feature of the book.  These have been particularly selected to show the birds in closeup and in flight.
