The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe, Volume 4.  Indexed and Illustrated.

The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe is the most comprehensive work so far published on the birds that are residents in, or visitors to, the continent of Europe.  Every one of the 642 species of bird that have been recorded in Europe is described and illustrated in detail in the five-volume encyclopedia.

The characteristics of each family of birds are described in full, followed by detailed features on each indivuidual species containing a guide to identification and information on its feeding and nesting habits, migration and habitat.

There are numerous excellent colour photographs, together with illustrations depicting seasonal variations in plumage and comparing similar species in flight. Specially produced maps show the distribution of the bird families around the world and the particular location of individual species in Europe.

Birds of Heath and Woodland includes pigeons and doves, kingfishers, nightjars, woodpeckers, swifts, larks, swallows, wagtails, cuckoos, wrens and owls.  While many of these birds have become familiar to the city dweller, this group also includes some of the most remarkable species   - the Cuckoo, whose young fly unguided to Africa when only three months old, and the Swift, which flies at over 110 kilometres per hour, and can eat, drink, sleep and mate in the air.
