The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe, Volume 2.  Indexed and Illustrated.

The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe is the most comprehensive work so far published on the birds that are residents in, or visitors to, the continent of Europe.  Every one of the 642 species of bird that have been recorded in Europe is described and illustrated in detail in the five-volume encyclopedia.

The characteristics of each family of birds are described in full, followed by detailed features on each indivuidual species containing a guide to identification and information on its feeding and nesting habits, migration and habitat.

There are numerous excellent colour photographs, together with illustrations depicting seasonal variations in plumage and comparing similar species in flight. Specially produced maps show the distribution of the bird families around the world and the particular location of individual species in Europe.

Birds of Mountain and Moorland, the second volume in the series, includes all the eagles, falcons, buzzards, vultures and hawks that have appeared in Europe.  And apart from the spectacular birds of prey, this volume also features bird families such as the grouse and the pheasants, partridges and bustards, the gallinules, coots, rails and cranes.

As John Gooders explains in his introduction, several of the bird families included here have had to struggle for survival.  This volume therefore stresses the importance of conservation as well as providing a full, systematic survery of the bires of mountain and moorland.
