The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe, Volume 5.  Indexed and Illustrated.

The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe is the most comprehensive work so far published on the birds that are residents in, or visitors to, the continent of Europe.  Every one of the 642 species of bird that have been recorded in Europe is described and illustrated in detail in the five-volume encyclopedia.

The characteristics of each family of birds are described in full, followed by detailed features on each indivuidual species containing a guide to identification and information on its feeding and nesting habits, migration and habitat.

There are numerous excellent colour photographs, together with illustrations depicting seasonal variations in plumage and comparing similar species in flight. Specially produced maps show the distribution of the bird families around the world and the particular location of individual species in Europe.

Birds of Hegerow and Garden, the fifth volume, includes the buntings, warblers, finches, tits, sparrows, starlings, orioles and crows.  Many of these birds are everyday sights, and their ability to adapt to a man-modified environment indicates that they are most likely to survive the increasing human influence on the natural world.

This work provides a unique study of some of the more common birds which live around us. With a comprehensive text and finely observed illustrations it shows that the more familiar birds are every bit as attractive as their more exotic relatives.
