A Biography.  16 colour and 100 Black and White illustrations.  Indexed.

Born in 1785, the son of a French sea captain and a Creole woman, brought up in Haiti, Revoluntionary France and on the family farm in Pennsylvania, John James Audubon, destined to become the most famous bird artist of all time, led a life as varied as his origins.

Fascinated from childhood with drawing birds, in 1820 Audubon conceived his 'Great Idea'  - the monumental task of making and publishing his own drawings of all the birds of America.  In 1838, in spite of some vicissitudes, Audubon's major achievement, The Birds of America, had been published.

In this superbly illustrated biography Johyn Chancellor has drawn heavily on Audubon's own journals, which offer many revealing insights into the character and life of this singular man.

Reproductions of Audubon's beautiful original watercolours, together with engravings from the published editions of his works, testify to the talent and achievement of a fascinating naturalist, explorer and artist.
