A Guide to Handling, Cleaning, Display and Restoration.   Illustrated and Indexed.  Glossary included.

Sotheby's Caring for Antiques offers easily-accesible advice o the everyday precautions that should be taken when handling, cleaning, storing or displaying your antiques.  Safe ways to lift ceramic objects, simple methods for washing jewellery, rolling and protecting carpets and mounting of textiles are just some of the practices discussed by the wide-ranging text.

Covering all types of antiques  - including glass, coins and medals, paintings and miniatures, clocks and watches, textiles and sculpture  - the book also offers detailed instructions on how to recognize a variety of conditions that may require attention, from foxing on a print to a structural deterioration of furniture and metalwork.

In many cases these problems may be arrested by the owner, but where the object appears to be in jeopardy, advice is given about when to enlist the services of a conservator or restorer, together with a broad outline of the remedies that these professionals might be able to effect.

This comprehensive book is the culmination of the extensive experience of conservators at Sotheby's and those working in national museums and private studios, all of whom have encountered the widest possible range of conservation challenges posed by objects from many different sources.

The large number of full colour illustrations, many drawn from Sotheby's archives, provide the reader with outstanding visual reference to aid in the recognition of various states and conditions, both pre - and post-treatment.
