Born in Otago in 1857, Charles Alma Baker spent much of his life in Malaya where he worked as a surveyor and owned tin mines and rubber plantations. Back in New Zealand he established the Limestone Downs estate in Port Waikato. He had always enjoyed fishing on his British estate and Malaya's Kinta River, but in 1919 he became a devotee of big-game fishing. In New Zealand, recreational angling was in its infancy, for it wasn't until 1915 that the first striped marlin had been caught on rod and reel. C. Alma Baker was a pioneer of modern rods, and his visit to the Bay of Islands in April 1923 changed New Zealand game fishing, introducing Catalina techniques and a shorter rod with a top-mounted reel, The country's Tourist and Publicity Department began working on promoting the tourist potential of the sport, but more was needed, and Baker invited Zane Grey as the perfect person to bring recognition to New Zealand.
Baker was Grey's unofficial host; an entire chapter is devoted to his fishing experiences with Grey. Baker also worked with Hardy Bros. in designing the ALMA Big Game Reel, the first 2-speed reel, described in this book
