Up Front: The Story of the All Black Scrum
(by Graeme Barrow)

ISBN: 0868633771

  • 1985 edition, 104 pages
  • Published by Heinemann Publishers
  • Hardcover with dust jacket, black boards
  • Good plus conditin, very slight foxing on page edges

A few illustrations included.   The All Black scrum has long been the subject of controversy.  Three decades before the rest of the rugby-playing world, New Zealand invented specialisation in the forwards.  This evolved into a unique and radical system - of seven forwards and a rover - which contributed partly to the first golden age of New Zealand rugby, and also to dispute and controversy as it came into conflict with the more orthodox systems in Britain and South Africa.

This book describes, for the first time, the origins and history of that system, and show how it both helped and hindered New Zwaland rubgy.  It also looks at the legality of the system.  Was New Zealand really cheating?

Nothing has so enriched rugby history as its humour.  This books also contains the best anecdotes the game has thrown up, and its richest moments of humour.
