Austrialian Birds in Australian Gardens. Indexed and Illustrated.
In A Garden of Birds Graham Pizzey, the distinguished ornithologist and author, writes of the delights of the different plant-communities of Australia and thier indifenous fauna: the Victorian Grampians; the Queensland rainforest; the Sydney sandstone vegetation; the ironbarks of the goldfield areas; the sandplains of south-western Australia.
He empathises with the gardeners' desire to bring something of these environments into their own gardens, but stresses that making a suburban garden into a good bird-garden cannot be done to a formula, as it requires a balance and subtle orchestration if it is not to be hotch-potch of plants and styles
The author writes of his experiences building his own garden at Mt Martha on the Mornington Peninsula, and the experiences of other bird-gardeners from Brisbane to Adelaide. They show how earlier environmental devastation is now beginning to be redressed, with gardeners making a positive ecological contribution by choosing native plants, thereby attracting the native species of bird.
Graham Pizzey has a strong affinity with the Australian environment. His entertaining, readable style brings alive the gardens and thier inhabitants, which his practical approach shows how we can each create our own bird-garden.
The book is enhanced by the author's delightful photographs and the exquiste drawings of Richard Weatherly.
