The Book of Flowers is one of the most lavish and attractive records of flower illustrations ever to be produced. The illustrations are for the most part taken from rare printed books, and cover the period 1485 to 1850, after which standards of reproduction began to decline.
The introduction consists of a short history of illustrated flower-books, followed by a description of the various types - from the early herbals of the fifteenth and sixeenth centuries through to the superb voloumes of the early nineteenth century.
The majority of the illustrations in The Book of Flowers have never been reproduced since the original books appeared. The large format, similar in size to so many of the famous flower-books of the past, enables most of the illustrations to be reproduced in their original size.
