An illustrated history of the evolution of Farming in New Zealand from its first beginnings of Missionaries in New Zealand to the modern days.
The European settlers on instructions from Samuel Marsden in 1814 were encouraged to import the first dairy cows for Church of England Mission Stations in the Bay of Islands.
Marsden envisaged that the Missionaries would not only introduce their Christian teaching but also create a greater measure of self-sufficiency in food supply be developing agriculture on the mission stations. Furthermore he stressed the need to introduce to the local Maori the improved practices and methods of European style farming.
By 1820 a general farming pattern had emerged. Grain, especially wheat was the main crop.
Cattle were the most important livestock. They originated from Marsdens' own New South Wales farm at his own expense.
Now New Zealand is recognised as having one of the most efficient dairy industries in the world and the modern industry based on aprroximately two million dairy cows in 16,000 herds is a major export industry.
