Sea of Glory is the remarkable and thrilling tale of a surprisngly little-known 19th-century naval voyage that explored vast tracts of the Pacific Ocean, including a new southern continent soon to be named Antaractica.
For four years, the six sailing ships and 346 men of the United States South Seas Exploring Expedition covered the Pacific from top to bottom, under the command of the controversial and egotistical Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, on whom, it has been claimed, Herman Melville modelled the character of Captain Ahab in Moby-Dick. They surveyed 280 islands, encountered murder and cannibalism in Fiji, and brought back more specimens and artefacts than all three of James Cook's voyages combined.
