The early colonists to New Zealand, particularly those who arrived to form the organised settlements sponsored by the New Zealand Company, brought with them a wide variety of elegant furniture from their homeland.  It was not long, however before cabinetmakers and other craftsmen were establishing factories in the main centres and recreating European styles with New Zealand woods.

Mr Northcote-Bate traces the colonial house, the colonial village, the development of local furniture and furniture styles, describes the ingenious cabin furniture which the colonist brought with them and discussess the influence of European styles on the furniture of the Maori house.

Magnificently illustrated, with eight pages of full colour plates, this is both an invaluable work of reference and a fascinating social study of an aspect of our cultural development which easily could have been lost to later generations.
