The picture of the dark Middle Ages still prevails even though this period between the end of the Roman Empire and the discovery of America by Columbus has been romanticized especially in Europe since the end of the 18th century.
In their book, Christoph Ulmer and Gianni d'Affara are not guided by such prejudices. Instead, to describe historic facts, they choose castles - in themselves the most sterotypical symbols of the Middle Ages - from a region which is generally not associated with eloquent evidence of knighthood, courtly life and modern castle romanticism.
The region of Friuli, situated between the southern edge of the Alps and the northern edge of the Adriatic and the karstic Slovenian mountains has always been a European corridor connecting East and West as well as North and South.
And especially the castles of Friuli demonstrate that the Middle Ages was not a dead and dark period of time between antiquity and the modern age, but a very eventful section within the continuous history of social, political and cultural life in Europe.
Christoph Ulmer presents this part of history with the examples of the turbulent past of the important castles of Friuli. Gianni d'Affara follows these impressive traces with his camera.
