The story of Shell in New Zealand is dominated by major events which signifcantly influenced the economic development of the country.  Shell was intimately involved both in the discovery and production of natural gas and condensate onshore and offshore in Taranaki and in the establishment of the refinery at Marsden Point.

Shell's role in New Zealand, however, extends far beyond these major events.  From it's small beginnings importing packed kerosines in the early 1900s, through to the introduction of bulk distribution in the 1920s with an emphasis on petrol, Shell has continued to meet the needs of a competitive market place right up to the present day.

The predominant underlying theme of this book is, however, the people who were Shell.  It is their story as well.  An appreciation of the culture of the company and it's staff is probably the greatest residual impression left with readers.
