With a preface and introduction by J.C.J Metford. A Study in legal and diplomatic history. Indexed.
First published in 1927, this controversial but fundamental study of the history of the Falklands, from their discovery to their reoccupation by the British in 1833, is the only serious and detailed book ever published on the subject in English and is essential reading for anyone who wants to know the background to the current crisis.
Based on the manuscript sources in France, Spain and Britain, the book traces the history of the various attempts to colonise the islands. It discusses the legal implications of the various transfers of sovereignty and lays bare the origins of the disputes which have arisen as a result of ambiguities and uncertainties that date back to the eighteenth century and beyond.
This re-issue includes a new preface and an article 'Falklands or Malvinas? The Background to the Dispute' - in which J.C.J. Metford brings the historical narrative upt to date, draws some attention to some weaknesses in Goebel's argument, and puts forward some alternative interpretations of the evidence.
