Indexed and Illustrated.   The first comprehensive account of Britain's threatened wildlife stemming directly from the Wildlife and Countryside Act, which became law in October 1981.

The first section of the book describes the extent and variety of Britain's fauna and flora;  discusses the influence of such factors as geology, climate, human activities and farming practices;  and explains the causes of rarity and why certain species are in danger of extinction.

The main part of the book consists of accounts of the 172 threatened species, each illustrated with a carefully chosen full0colour photograph.  Each species is separately described and details are given of it shabitat, distribution, and status, with background information about the threat it faces.

In the third section, the author discusses conservation  - what is being done  - what needs to be done  - the role of the individual and the law as it stands today.
