The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe Volume One.   Illustrated and Indexed.

The Orbis Encyclopedia of Birds of Britain and Europe is the most comprehensive work so far published on the birds that are resident in, or visitors to, the continent of Europe. The complete five-volume encyclopedia follows the systematic classification of birds into 27 orders, each of these divided into one or more families.

After a full description of each family, each individual species is given a complete page to itself. The bird is illustrated, and, where there are significant differences between spring and winter plumage, between the sexes or between the adult and juvenile, these are also shown.

Call, nesting, and courtship habits, and food are all detailed and there is a map to show the distribution and movements of each species at different seasons.  Pages of comparative drawings illustrate differences of appearance in flight and markings that may become apparent only when the bird is in the air.

Volume One, Birds of Ocean and Estuary, includes the waders, wildfowl and seabirds.  Each of the gannets, shearwaters, petrels, albatrosses, duck, geese and swans that have ever appeared in Eruope is featured.  So too are the divers, the grebes and herons, the pelicans and frigatebirds.

The volume opens with general information on bird classification, habitat and identification and continues with an exhaustive survey of the feeding habits, nesting, migration and ecology of the birds of ocean and estuary.

The superb colour photographs are complemented by detailed paintings, and there are full-page guides to the identification of the brids in flight.

The specially commissioned maps show the world distribution of the families, and where individual species are to be found in Europe, including their breeding grounds, and their winter and migrational range.

Finally, John Gooders includes a personal guide to the best wildfowl -watching areas of Europe.
