Illustrated and Indexed.   The Voyage of Discovery 1492.

Five hundred years ago an obscure Genoese mariner sailing in the service of Their Catholic Majesties, the Sovereigns of Spain, made the single greatest voyage of discovery the world has ever known.

The consequences of the First Voyage of Columbus were so momentous that even today they are difficult to grasp.  From that voyage stemmed not only a great Age of Exploration that would shortly transofrm forever men's understanding of the planet o which they lived, but indeed the entire history of European enterprise in America, including the history of the United States, of Canada and of all the nations of Central and South America.   It is no wonder that October 12 is celebrated annually throughout the length and breadth of the Western Hemisphere.

Samuel Eliot Morison writes from a perspective of a fellow mariner that Columbus would himself fully have appreciated.    The text of this illustrated volume is taken from Morison's last book about the Age of Discovery,  - The European Discovery of America: The Southern Voyages. It represents a great historian's final word on his lifelong hero.
