New Zealand's Subantarctic Islands.   Indexed and Illustrated.  Foreword by Sir Peter Scott.

New Zealand's lonely subantarctic islands  - the Antipodes, Bounty, Snares, Campbell, and Auckland Islands  - lie south of New Zealand on the way to Antaractica, isolated by the notorious Roaring Forties and gale-force winds of the Southern Ocean.

Although mere dots of land in a vast expanse of sea, they are vital breeding grounds for millions of sea birds and ten of thousands of marine mammals.  Many animals and plants are unique to the region.  On one of Campbell Island's oofshore stacks is a flightless teal  - the world's rarest water fowl  - and there are kelp flies with rudimentary wings which have lost the power of flight in the gale-lashed environment.

Campbell Island is the world's major breeding ground for the southern royal albatross, and the main island of the Snares  - just over three-and-a-half kilometres long, has more nesting sea birds than the entire coastline of the British Isles.

Today, all five island groups are managed as nature reserves, and acknowledged to be of worldwide ecological importance, with their rare species of birds, marine mammals, insects and plants, and some of the last remaining unmodified environments on Earth.

This book contains an absolute wealth of fascinating detail about the birds and other wildlife of the subantartic islands.  It also provides a lively picture of the history of man's involvement with the islands.

Beyond The Roaring Forties, with its superb photographs and illustrations, is written in a clear and readable style, and is the first comprehensive book about New Zealand's subantarctic islands.
