A view of the American Revolution.   Illustrated and Indexed.

On 16 November 1776, a ship flying the red-and-white-striped ensign of the Continental Congress entered the port of St Eustatius in the West Indies.  The gun of the island's fort fired the ritual salute.    It was the first official salute to the United States of America and was to have the most profound repercussions for England, her American colonies and the rest of the Old World.

In The First Salute, Barbara Tuchman, one of the world's most popular and distinguished historians, at last turns her sights on her native America to give a provocative and searching view of the pivotal events of the American Revolution.

Barbara Tuchman explores the various influences on each of the warring forces during the years of conflict.  She analyses the territorial rivalries that determined Europe's crucial role in the American struggle and demonstrates how the aid offered to the colonies by England's European enemies made the triumph of American Independence inevitable.

In addition, the auother, examines the key role played by the opposing navies and reveals the characters of the major figures of the time:  Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney, the dominant force behind Britain's immense sea power;   Lor Cornwallis, the general who led the British forces at the battle of Yorktown;  and General George Washington, a man possessed of a rare spiritual strenght and nobility.

The First Salute recasts the tumultuous years of the American War of Independence in a challenging new light.
