An Account of Our Continental European Settlers.  Illustrated.

Few present day New Zealand problems have received such sympathetic and penetrating attention as Dr Lochore's study of the European aliens who have emigrated to the Dominion.

From most Continental countries they have come in stray groups and families, in 'chains' and organised parties, to settle with varying success in a new land.  Some have become true New Zealanders in a generation or two, but others, their deepest loyalty still given to homelands of memory, have remained a problem to themselves and to New Zealand.

Dr Lochore's examination of the different racial groups and their life in the Dominion has been written with the benefit of practical experience and knowledge of our alien settlers. He deals in detail with the background and New Zealand history of the Scandinavians, Finns, Italians, Yugoslavs, Greeks, French, Dutch, Belgians, Germans, Austrians, Swiss, Hungarians, Russians, Poles and Czechoslovaks.

Some nationalities emerge from his careful scrutiny with considerable credit, but others are found lacking.  The author shows a balanced judgment throughout, but where he feels it necessary, points out the unsatisfactory nature of the absorption into our society of some Continental peoples.

War-time refugees are given particular attention and the conclusions given show these people in a new and favourable light.

This is a book of true humanity, fully documented where necessary and with many touches of humour.  It is a fearless and honest study that presents the 'alien problem' in a readable and most interesting manner.
