Some Nineteenth Century Engravings
While browsing through the famous second-hand bookshops in the village of Hay on Wye in England, James Buchanan, a New Zealander, came across a rich assortment of illustrations and articles all pertaining to New Zealand - from nineteenth-century illustrated publications.
When pieced together this material presents a fascinating picture of the colony of New Zealand as seen though the eyes of middle class, nineteenth-century Englishmen.
Historian Laurie Barber had compiled a throughtful commentary on tthese splendid engravings to give us an intriguing glimpse of early New Zealand as the 'mother country' saw us.
