From the arrival of the first Maori until the relatively recent innovation of air travel, this book catalogues New Zealand's maritime history; from canoes, tiny sailing vessels, the whalers and sealers, the trading adventurers in their barques and brigs, immigrants transports, steam ships, diesel, and modern time cruisers are all recalled and beautifully illustrated.
The paintings used to illustrate this book are as far as possible, contemporary. An illustration of a vessel trading on the New Zealand coast in the 1850s should be painted in the style of the 1850s; an illustration of a warship of the 1970s should be painted in the style of the 1970s. The intention has been to illustrate fashion in the art of paintings as much as to show the ships and scenes. New Zealand is a maritime nation. It has to be.
Situated as it is, a scattering of islands in the South Pacific. nearly 2000 kilometres from the nearest land mass, shielded from the ice of Antarctica by no more than emptiness, ocean rollers and the wheeling seabirds, New Zealand has depended on ships and seafarers.
