Ironside was an early Wesleyan missionary to the Maori, who advised and translated for them during the treaty of Waitangi signing. This gives an account of his life and work, and the political climate between Maori and the new settlers and government.
Though there were many missionaries, Ironside's story was one that was recorded, in published memoirs and unpublished journals. His life reflect the strength of 19th century Methodism in Britain and the dedication of its missionaries.
