Pioneer, a man of property, and founder of a famous New Zealand boarding school, James Dilworth is unquentionable a nineteenth-century Auckland notable.

Over a period of motre than fifty years he played a significant part in many public activities, touching causes as diverse as provincial politics, the trustee savings bank movement, church affairs, the agricultural and pastoral societey, and education. Yet he was also a very private man revealing little of his private life and personal feeling for the outside world to observe and record.

This biography is an attempt to reveal the true, the 'historical' James Dilworth. Stone travelled as far a Ireland, delved amonst legal papers and the labyrinth of family lore. Much was discovered.
