Charles Blomfield is remembered chiefly for his paintings of the Pink and White Terraces before they were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Tarawera. But he was an avid explorer, and travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand "taking" pictures much as a photographer would today. He has left many beautiful paintings and sketches of the wild New Zealand landscape as he found it in the span of more than sixty years, 1862 to 1926, and these paintings are now being recognised as an important part of our heritage.
