George Augustus Selwyn Bishop of New Zealand and Litchfield
Selwyn, a bishop at tthirty-two, was one of those young men, not uncommon in the history of New Zealand, with foresight and wisdom far beyond his years. The execution of his designs for the church in the undeveloped land that New Zealand then was, required an exceptional vigour of mind and body. Selwyn had these in abundance.
He was a great walker, who strode untiringly across the great expanse of his diocese and sailed a small craft to the distant islands in Melanesia.
He often stirred up controvery. He was deeply involved in the land wars, but the accusation that his activities were directed against the Maori is here clearly refuted.
