Spencer Westmacott settled in the King Country in 1910 and returned to it after being injured at Gallipoli. These are his memoirs, abridged and edited by his daughter-in-law, and they are a remarkable record of his first four years in the King Country.
An accurate and thorough observer, he describes the leasing of the land and its surveying; then the hard jobs of cutting and burning off the bush and establishing sheep.
He does not conceal the trieals of body and spirit in this new life, but his determination and energy make this an amazing story of fortitude and achievement.
