A Life of the Honourable William Swainson
A biography of William Swainson, Attorney-General (1841-56), member of the Executive and Legislative Councils, and writer.
Swainson was to write in his own book, 'New Zealand and its Colonization', he conceived the British Government's principal object in establishing its authority to be the promotion of the civilisation and development of the Maori people.
Swainson was the friend of many distinguished men and the ardent admirer of personable young women. His many social activities, and the letters which describe them, give unusual insights into the life of a youthful city, at first a garrison town, till 1865 the country's capital, but increasingly an independent, forward-looking communitiy with its own mores.
'The Observer', in 1881, noted that Swainson called his pretty place at Taurarua, "Bohemia" and his drawing is filled with his sketches and verses...a most genial man and a most pleasant companion is this ancient host of Bohemia.
