A Biography of Alfred Nesbit Brown
Alfred Nesbit Brown is on of the most important figures in New Zealand missionary and pioneer history.
Arriving in 1829, well before colonisation, he ran a school in Northland under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society.
He explored the country widely, meeting all the leading Maori and pakeha figures of the time and in 1838 settled in Tauranga, where he worked unremittingly to develop the Mission, bring about an end to hostilities and to protect Maori from the consequences of a growing European settlement.
During the wars of the 1860s he took in refugees, tended the wounded and buried the dead, both Maori and pakeha.
He certainy is a man deserving of remembrance.
