The Wreck of the Strathmore in 1875
In the great flood of emigration fro Britain to New Zealand and Australia in the 1870s there were some who never completed the long ocean voyage. Fire and icebergs took their toll of sailing ships; others were simply overwhelmed by the elements or wrecked on treacherous reefs and islands.
This is the story of the emigrants on the ship "Strathmore" wrecked on the Crozet Island in the southern Indian Ocean in 1875. It tells the story of their dramatic struggle for survival against formidable odds -- the vicious climate, lack of food and adequate shelter, disease, and lack of leadership -- and of their eventual rescue.
