A History of Catholics in New Zealand

In God's farthest Outpost, leading historian Michael King tells the story of 200 years of Catholic activity in New Zealand in a superbly illustrated book that will have wide appeal to everybody interested in New Zealand history and culture. Catholics first set foot in New Zealand in 1769. By the 1820s the Church had a permanent presence here, though the first resident members of religious orders did not begin to arrive until 1838.

Since the 1880s Catholics have made up around 14 per cent of the country's population. God's Farthest Outpost assesses the largely French character of the Church in its first three decades of evangelizing and the transformation that occurred after Irish immigrants flocked to the new colony.

It describes the upheavals that followed the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, and it stresses the contribution made by Maori to New Zealand Catholicism. The book is profusely illustrated by historical photographs and Catholic ephemera.
