In 1968 the first Cuan Mhuire, a home for the care and rehabilitation of alcoholics, was set up by Sister Mary Consilio in a disused building attached to the Convent of Mercy in Athy, Co. Kildare.
From her first contact with alcoholics Sr Consilio realised that an alcoholic's outstanding need was for love and understanding. She set about providing a place for alcoholics where treatment was based, not on secrecy and censure, but on openness and love, and where all were welcome irrespective of their ability to pay.
Since then three more Cuan Mhuire centres have been opened in Ireland.
This is an account of one woman's struggle to help others overcome their addiction. It traces her story from her childhood to her establishment of the first Cuan Mhuire, outline the theory behind the method and describing the opposition she encountered on the way.
