John Boultbee is probably a unique historical figure. He could be the only educated well-brought-up young Englishman ever to have worked as a common sealer among the ruffians usually employed to make up the small gangs left by the early sealing vessels on the islands of Bass Strait and on the southern coast of New Zealand.
His account of his adventures, which he called Journal of a Rambler, was recently made available by the Boultbee family in England.
It is a truly authentic real-life story of the sealing days, full of hardships and the dangers faced by men left to fend for themselves among savage scenes and peoples for long periods of time.
