Big Country of the West and the North
In 1970 Newton made a second journey visiting farms in the west and north of the North Island. This book records that journey.
The stations he described have one feature in common: at the time of European arrival they were all covered in heavy forest which had to be felled, or burned off before the pioneers couldestablish their runs.
More often than not this was a hard, heartbreaking business, a fight against the ever-present bush which, on some of the properties Newton visited, is still flourishing.
Though a South Island sheep man, Newton is no stranger to this world. He records the history of the stations and shares warm anecdotes of his travels.
