"... probably the finest account of the infantryman's view of these grueling campaigns" ;

"a vivid day-to-day record of the gradual perfection of a fighting unit and of a life of constant strain made tolerable by friendship ...";

Except for Freyberg himself, no officer was more closely identifies with 2 NZ Division than Kippenberger. Nor was anyone better known or liked by its hard-bitten veterans.

Kippenberger took part in all the Divisions major campaigns; Greece; Crete where her first commanded a Brigade; Sidi Rezegh; the desert battles at Ruweisat; and Al Mrier; Alamein; and of course Cassino.

In most of these actions he was in command of an infantry brigade, too close to the fighting and the front line for his awareness of the individual soldier's dangers and tragedies to becomr dulled.
