The Perano family operated whaling stations inside the narrow entrance to the Tory Channel in Cook Strait fo more than half a century.
Their methods involved small, high-speed chasers which sometimes actually mustered the humpback whales like a shepherd's dog rounds up sheep, driving them into the narrow entrance of Tory Channel for killing and processing on the shore factory.
This strong and colourful family, of Italian descent, never sought publicity. They were a private, self-reliant, hardy people . Here is their story.
